Cicerone - L’Ultimo Repubblicano
una nuova opera teatrale sugli ultimi giorni della Repubblica Romanadi Justin Butcher
43 A.C. La Repubblica romana è sul punto di crollare.Dopo aver sconfitto i liberatores che avevano assassinato Giulio Cesare, i suoi eredi,lo scaltro e calcolatore Ottaviano e il corrotto demagogo Marco Antonio, si sonomessi in testa di diventare i nuovi governanti di Roma. Come Marco Bruto,sollevando il suo pugnale insanguinato dopo l assassinio di Cesare, aveva invocatoCicerone per ripristinare la Repubblica, tutti gli occhi ora guardano al veneratoanziano statista, avvocato e oratore per guidare un ultima resistenza contro la tirannia.Immediatamente Cicerone si mette a comporre una serie di discorsi che denunciano esatireggiano la corruzione criminale di Marco Antonio, noti come Filippiche, chepronuncia in Senato.Il sostegno pubblico per Cicerone sale alle stelle. Antonio viene dichiarato nemicodello Stato e per un breve periodo sembra che Cicerone riesca a ripristinare ilgoverno del Senato. Ma poi gli eventi si rivoltano fatalmente contro di lui...l’opera è ambientata nel giardino della villa sul mare di Cicerone a Formia, mentreprepara i suoi discorsi contro Antonio. In un sogno da sveglio, Cicerone immaginache la statua di Tullia prenda vita e lo avverta di fuggire in esilio. La morte perdifendere la Repubblica fino all’ultimo è preferibile alla vita in esilio, sostiene – ecosì inizia una sorta di dialogo socratico.Dal punto di vista politico, la storia ha enormi risonanze con i giorni nostri: unpolitico, un avvocato e un letterato coraggioso e di sani principi che combatte l'ultimabattaglia per salvare la Repubblica romana. Egli soppesò i costi e misevolontariamente in gioco la propria vita per difendere ciò in cui credeva, pagando ilprezzo più alto. Ma per poco non ci riuscì. Non è forse questo il tipo di politico, iltipo di leader, di cui abbiamo bisogno oggi?In uN epoca di nuovi demagoghi, con le democrazie minacciate da una mareacrescente di nuovi estremismi, la storia di questo disperato ed eroico episodio delmondo antico non è mai stata così salutare.Justin Butcher è il pluripremiato scrittore di Scaramouche Jones, The Madness ofGeorge Dubya e The Devil Passion, nonché vincitore del 2022 Off West End BestActor Award. L’ultimo Repubblicano sarà prodotto nel luglio 2024 dalla compagnia di produzione britannica Passion Pit Theatre di Justin Butcher, in associazione con J.Productions di Milano, per il Festival Internazionale del Teatro Romano di Volterra.

ENGLISH VERSIONCicero - The Last Republican

a new play about the last days of the Roman Republic by Justin Butcher 43 BC. The Roman Republic is on the point of collapse. Civil war looms. Julius Caesar has been assassinated. His heir Octavian and the corrupt demagogue Mark Antony set about making themselves the new rulers of Rome. Marcus Brutus, lifting his bloodstained dagger after the assassination, calls upon Cicero to restore the Republic. All eyes now look to the revered elder statesman, lawyer and orator to lead a last stand against tyranny.  Immediately Cicero sets about composing a series of speeches exposing and satirising Mark Antony’s criminal corruption known as the Philippics, which he delivers in the Senate. Public support for Cicero soars. Antony is declared an enemy of the state, and for a brief tantalising period, it seems as if Cicero will succeed in restoring the rule of the Senate. But then events turn fatally against him … The play is set in the garden of Cicero’s seaside villa in Formiae, as he prepares his speeches against Antony. His beloved daughter Tullia, who has died two years earlier, appears to Cicero in a waking dream and warns him to flee into exile. Death defending the Republic to the last is preferable to life in exile, he argues - and so a fierce debate erupts: his own life weighed against the destiny of Rome. Politically, the story has huge resonances with today - a brave, principled, old school politician fighting a last-ditch battle to save the Roman republic. He weighed up the cost, and willingly put his own life on the line to stand up for what he believed in, and paid the ultimate price. But he nearly succeeded. Isn’t this the kind of politician, the kind of leader, we need today?  In an era of new demagogues, with democracies under threat from a rising tide of new extremism, the story of this desperate, heroic episode from the ancient world has never been more salutary.
Justin Butcher is the multi-award winning writer of Scaramouche Jones, The Madness of George Dubya and The Devil’s Passion, and winner of the 2022 Off West End Best Actor’s Award. He studied Latin & Greek Literature & Philosophy at Oxford University and has lectured widely on the life and works of Cicero.
Cicero - The Last Republican will be produced in July 2024 by J.Productions, Milan, for the Volterra International Festival Teatro Romano.
